A Landmark of 20th-Century Avant-Garde Literature: The Legendary Banned Paris First Edition
An exceptional, highly collectible copy of the true first edition, first printing of Henry Miller’s modern masterpiece, Tropic of Cancer, published in Paris by the legendary Obelisk Press in September 1934.
Set in Paris during the late 1920s and early 1930s, this heavily autobiographical novel completely redefined the boundaries of contemporary fiction through its fluid stream of consciousness, raw philosophical musings, and explicit sexuality. Deemed highly obscene by Anglo-American authorities, the book was instantly banned in the United States and Great Britain, sparking a monumental 30-year literary censorship battle that was only resolved in 1961.
One of only 1,000 copies ever printed of this historic first impression. Most surviving examples are found heavily worn, damaged, or lacking the iconic, fragile wrappers. This particular copy stands out for its remarkable state of preservation.
