An important and finely produced mid-19th century atlas titled A New General Atlas of Modern Geography, published in London by James Wyld, Geographer to the Queen.
This substantial work comprises a complete series of 68 engraved maps, including additional plates (44A, 54A, 60A, 60B), all finely executed in copper engraving and enhanced with original hand colouring. The atlas presents a comprehensive geographical representation of the world as understood during the Victorian era, including detailed maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, alongside regional and national cartography.
Several maps are presented as large-format folding or double-page plates, featuring elaborate decorative borders and precise topographical detail. The atlas reflects both the scientific advancements and the imperial perspective of 19th-century British cartography.
The volume retains its original full leather binding, richly decorated in gilt with ornamental borders. The binding shows expected signs of wear consistent with age, while remaining structurally sound. Internally, the maps are generally well preserved, with light foxing and minor age-related toning.
A significant and highly decorative cartographic work, desirable for collectors, institutions, and interior display, representing one of the notable productions of James Wyld, one of the leading British mapmakers of his time.
